CMG Workers United (CMGWU) is a grassroots group of Canadian Media Guild (CMG) members from all over the country who are working together to transform CMG into a member-led, fighting and organizing union!
We work all over Canada and across CMG’s branches as producers, writers, broadcasters, freelancers, temps, technical workers and more — all united in the belief that our union can be bigger, stronger and more democratic.
CMG Workers United hosts regular trainings and meetings where we work together to craft policy goals and campaign for progressive union election candidates with positive visions for the future. We make decisions democratically, and everyone is invited to the table.
Our public institutions, including the media, are under attack by those who wish to dismantle us piece-by-piece so they can retain the money and power, without accountability. We believe our union has the power to defend us against the forces that threaten our jobs, workplaces and democratic principles. But we have to do it together. Through grassroots organization, mobilization and training, we can fight side-by-side to protect each other and the vital services we provide to Canadians.
Right now, CMG operates as a service union. Members think of their union as a third-party subscription service. They pay dues in exchange for services, but don’t feel connected or empowered. We want to transform CMG into an organizing union, where members see themselves as the union, with the agency to take collective action to stand up for their rights.
CMG Workers United prioritizes accessibility, inclusivity and a collectivist approach to organizing. We will support our branches fighting for better wages and working conditions, empower our workers to stand up for their rights, reform the temporary worker system that exploits our most vulnerable and precarious workers, and forge solidarity with our most under-represented and marginalized members, including, freelancers, technical workers and those at small branches. Because we are communication professionals, after all, and who doesn't need a blog?
CMG Workers United is running a diverse and progressive slate of candidates in the upcoming elections who are united in their vision to make CMG bigger, stronger, more transparent and democratic
